"Entroido", así es como se denomina el carnaval en Galicia. Su origen, que se remonta a tiempos ancentrales, algunos lo atribuyen a la cultura celta, otros lo vinculan al cambio de estación o al período de abstinencia antes de la Cuaresma. Los Peliqueiros de Laza, los Cigarróns de Verín, las Pantallas de Xinzo, los Generales del Ulla, los Boteiros de Viana do Bolo, el loro Ravachol en Pontevedra, son algunas de las representaciones más típicas de la fiesta. El calendario de carnaval en Galicia es muy completo y extenso, son muchos los lugares que celebran sus tradicionales costumbres, con un fuerte arraigo y seguimiento social. Como remate de las fiestas, el miércoles de ceniza es la fecha en que muchas localidades escogen para hacer el "entierro de la sardina".
